Governor of Nebraska Wants Drug Testing for Those Applying for Welfare

Have you taken a look at the national debt lately?
Take some blood pressure medication before you do, because it’s so atrociously high you might keel over from a heart attack once you see the figures.
Obviously, with our economy still in recovery mode, it’s more critical than ever to reduce our spending and pay off our debt.
A good place to start cutting is the welfare system, removing the fraud and dead weight that are abusing the system, which is exactly what the governor of Nebraska wants to do by making it mandatory for those applying for help to undergo drug testing.
Yeah, you can imagine how liberals are going to react to that, right?
Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said Wednesday he’s looking into the possibility of requiring drug testing for people who want to get on welfare.
“It’s one of the things we’ve looked at,” Ricketts said in response to a question during his monthly call-in show for the Nebraska Broadcasters Association, noting that drug testing is required for some professions, such as manufacturing.
Former Sen. Charlie Janssen, who is now state auditor, proposed drug testing for welfare recipients in 2010, but the bill didn’t go anywhere after a wave of criticism that it was mean-spirited and harmful to poor children.
But Ricketts said he was often asked about the idea while on the campaign trail last year and continues to get questions about it now that he’s in office.
“People are generally very supportive of the idea,” he told Kevin Thomas on KLIN Wednesday.
Drug testing for welfare eligibility is a no brainer, as it’s a perfect compromise that allows us to shrink the size of the system and cut spending, without putting those who are using their benefits as a hand up instead of a hand out in a worse financial situation.
Something like this allows our country to start looking at reducing dependence on welfare and encouraging personal responsibility, while spending American tax dollars more wisely.
Oh, and liberals absolutely hate the idea, which makes me love it even more.

  1. How about the governor and the people that want to drug test people on welfare be required to take a drug test too and pay for all the drug testing for the people on welfare. That way the tax payers won't have to.
